Roundabouts are becoming more and more common place even here in the US. They are designed to prevent accidents and increase traffic flow, but if you don't act properly it can become a very dangerous situation. There's a few VERY important rules to follow in these
- DO NOT leave your lane in the roundabout. Stay in the lane at all times until you are ready to leave the roundabout.
- Yield to all drivers in the roundabout. Do not try and force your way in, you're just going to cause an accident.
- DO NOT stop in the roundabout. That's asking to get hit.
- DO NOT drive next to oversized vehicles. They need extra room, and will often drive in the expansion lane(concrete apron) to make it easier to navigate.
Slow down as you approach the roundabout, and watch for pedestrians in the crosswalk.
Continue toward the roundabout and look to your left as you near the yield sign and dashed yield line at the entrance to the roundabout. Yield to traffic already in the roundabout.
Once you see a gap in traffic, enter the circle and proceed to your exit. If there is no traffic in the roundabout, you may enter without yielding.
Look for pedestrians and use your turn signal before you exit, and make sure to stay in your lane as you navigate the roundabout.
If you follow these simple guidelines, everything will run smooth and much faster then most intersections with stop lights or stop signs. Take your time, yield, and keep moving once you're in.
Thanks for reading, share with anyone you know who lives by one of these to keep everyone safe!
